Design and Details

GeoComb Homes are built with light weight sections of platform, walls, windows, doors, kitchen, bath, and roof that are each carried into place easily by two people. A team of 3 or more can move them into position to be assembled into a variety of shapes and configurations with a few hand tools in a few hours.

It starts with a one-cell unit, one level or stacked. More "cells" can be instantly connected into multi-room "honeycomb" arrangments. The interchangeable and interlocking walls, roof, windows, and doors make adding more rooms (or removing them) and designing your floor plan fun and easy. Chains of Geocomb with connected clusters like the ones shown below are just some examples of the versatility of this method. Not yet pictured are the great deck components and the gray water, wind and solar power, and other additions to the off grid sustainability vision we are creating.

The wall and roof components are made of metal reinforced Structural Insulated Panels - a sandwich of rigid foam and sheathing of OSB, MgO, or plywood, and/or skins of wood paneling or MgO, This new generation material is weatherproof as is, and can be painted, textured, or stained. It is fireproof, waterproof, and structural - so the entire home can be fabricated and bult using fire and flood resistant methods and materials when required.

A range of floor, wall, and ceiling skin choices can be available to suit your tastes.Quick-release kitchen, bathroom, and closet additions complete your home package. Standard roofing is EPDM rubber sheeting with options for copper or sheetmetal, and eaves, skylights, and solar integration. We are in the process of choosing additional products and vendors to be integrated into GeoComb Homes. Illustrations of these features will be posted as the specific products are added to our offerings.

It is weather sealed and cozy as soon as it is assembled with no caulk or nails.

SIP - Structural Insulated Panel Diagram

SIP panels are the building material for the  21st Century

Structural insulated panels (SIPs) are a high performance building system for residential and light commercial construction. The panels consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB).  SIPs are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. Building with SIPs will save you time, money and labor.

Building with SIPs generally costs about the same as building with wood frame construction when you factor in the labor savings resulting from shorter construction time and less jobsite waste.  Other savings are realized because smaller heating and cooling systems are required with SIP construction.

It can be placed on an existing slab or deck using bolt-down components similar to, but often thinner than, the self supporting floor platforms. Adjustable leveling hardware at each corner make setting it up even easier,. We provide a template for locating foundation hardware. You and your contractor are responsible for site plans and permits, and for site preparation and foundation work according to your local codes and conditions.

Assembly Detail

The platform is assembled as sections that lock together to form the floor of each unit. A 2nd floor partial platform with an opening for a ladder can be placed on top of the walls to build a loft-style second level. The roof panels fit snugly on the wall and get connected to the platform making the walls lock into place. Set up or take down takes between 1 and 4 hours per unit depending on the configuration and your experience. We offer installation service on request.

The simple style for a single cell unit roof is divided into 6 triangle panels. It makes either a 14" "crown" opening at the top for uses like ventilation, a light tube, or a stove pipe, or you can use thestyle with a 3 inch opening for a plumbing vent. Each section can be solid, or have a skylight, Solar PV sections. Additions include eaves and rain catchment.

During assembly, each part is automatically interlocked and secured so that the finished structure is highly stable and resistant to wind and weather. It is well insulated at up to R26. Each unit can be instantly connected to other units to expand and diversify your installation. Changing the configuration of the components is fairly simple and quick. This makes them removable, reusable, and replaceable as parts.
